New black framed window and black entry door installed on a white sided home

Taking out a window or door sounds simple until the old unit comes out and you find out what the wall around it has been dealing with for twenty or thirty years. Water finds its way in around bad flashing long before anyone notices a soft spot on the inside, so a big part of this job is what happens after the old unit is pulled and the opening is sitting open. We check the framing for rot, check the sill for damage, and only then set the new window or door.

A lot of the failures we see later trace back to two things, an opening that was not properly flashed and a unit that was caulked shut instead of allowed to seal and drain the way it was designed to. In this part of Wisconsin the swing between a January cold snap and a July afternoon is enormous, and a window that was jammed into an opening without room to move will eventually crack a seal or start letting air through at the corners.

How it runs

  1. Walkthrough and measure We look at each opening, take measurements, and note anything unusual about the framing before ordering units.
  2. Removal Old windows or doors come out down to the rough opening so we can see what is actually behind them.
  3. Opening prep Any rot or damaged framing gets addressed and the opening is flashed properly before anything new goes in.
  4. Set the unit The new window or door is set, leveled, shimmed, and fastened according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  5. Seal and insulate Gaps are insulated and sealed so air and water cannot get behind the new unit.
  6. Trim and finish Exterior trim goes back on, caulk lines are finished, and the opening is cleaned up.
